Stranded Spirits

Easton Thomas, a handsome and wealthy man with a generous heart, owns an historic mansion on Florida’s Gold Coast, a house filled with spirits and secrets from the past. When a hurricane grounds all flights and cruise ship connections, Easton invites a group of stranded passengers to ride out the storm at his mansion. He is drawn to Randy, a shy and insecure man from Atlanta, but Mitchell, Easton’s longtime companion and estate manager, has different plans for Easton.

Excerpt:
Mitchell buttoned his shirt and made his way to the center railing overlooking the downstairs entry. “Easton, is that you?” He could see what looked like a crowd gathered near the front entry casually dropping suitcases and bags. “Did you pick up a tour bus before your cruise?” he asked sarcastically, trying to contain his anger. “Easton, a word please. This is a bad time to have a house full of guests. These people are not stray cats that you found on the highway. They are adults caught up in the same shitty mess as the rest of South Florida, so why do you feel responsible for them?” Mitchell hissed.

“I guess for the same reason I have always felt responsible for you,” Easton smiled, and his eyes glowed in the soft light. He took Mitchell in his arms and kissed him. “We have an ample supply of backup candles and flashlights in the cellar closet. Do you mind bringing them upstairs in case we lose power? I will move the cars to the garage. I don’t want them damaged,” Easton said.

“Let me do that,” Mitchell volunteered as he thought about the apartment over the garage. There was no need to take any unnecessary chances.

Mitchell opened the door and headed out into the fierce wind and rain. He secured the vehicles, closed the garage door, and started up the side stairs to the second floor. He reached the door to the apartment that had initially served as the living quarters for the chauffeurs, stepped inside, and closed the door. “Where are you?” Mitchell whispered.

He saw the shadow emerge cautiously from the adjacent room. “I’m here. I was beginning to worry. I considered leaving, but I wouldn’t make it very far in this weather. Why did Easton come back? I thought he would be away for a couple of weeks.”

“It’s this storm. The flights are grounded and he brought a group of stranded passengers with him to ride out the storm. You will have to stay here until it’s clear to leave.”

“How can I do that? There is no food here, and I cannot get cell service. Maybe we should let Easton know I’m here.”

“Absolutely not! Easton made it clear that you were not to come back here. I have no intention of being out on the street on my ass at this time in my life. I have too much to lose. I’ll bring you coffee and food before everyone wakes in the morning, so just take it easy.” Mitchell leaned in and kissed him. “Goodnight, and try to be patient.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” he grumbled.

The Escaped Murderer of Somerville

The Escaped Murderer of Somerville
Click Here or on Cover Above to Purchase

The man who killed an entire family is on the run and eluding authorities after escaping from the Rockfort Asylum. Claiming he has a Master to please, he hunts the curious teen who is determined to find him. In a twisted and bizarre cat and mouse game, Jerry is lured into the forest by the cries of a woman in distress, but discovers something much more sinister.

Excerpt:
When I first got the idea of checking out the sewers, my friend Nick wasn’t supposed to go down with me.

“What are you doing?” I asked him.

“What does it look like I’m doing? I’m coming with you,” he said with a smile.

We reached a fork in the tunnel when one of the dim bulbs hanging over us flickered and gave out. “Nick,” I said as I shone the flashlight right in front of us. “Look at the wall and tell me what you see.”

“I see all sorts of green icky stuff growing on the walls,” he said.

I peeled off a bit and threw it to the ground.

Nick let out a nervous laugh as he watched me pull down another layer. “Come on, Jerry. Let’s get out of here.”

“Nick, turn off that bulb.”

He gave it a pull and the room fell into darkness. After a few seconds I began to see patterns form, but they didn’t make any sense to me. The best I could tell was that they were a mathematical code of some sort. I scribbled down the florescent code as best as I could.

“It looks like mathematics,” said Nick. “Do you think this entire room has some sort of codes written on the walls?”

“It’s possible,” I answered.

***

“It was good of you to finally come to me,” he said. A sinister grin was on his face as he stared at me.

“What do you want from me?” I asked.

“I want to make sure the deed is done,” James Pritchett smiled at me.

“What deed are you talking about?”

“It seems you haven’t been able to figure it out,” he grinned.

“Figure what out?” I asked.

“You found my hideout,” he said. He started to step towards me. “You found my notebook. You read my plans.”

“It was all gibberish to me,” I answered. “Where’s the girl?” I asked him.

“What girl?”

“The girl who was screaming for help,” I answered. “What did you do to her?”

“Your mind must be playing tricks on you,” he said. He wouldn’t stop smiling. “No one shouted for help.”

Forcing my body to listen to what my mind wanted it to do, I ran from him.

“I love it when they run,” he laughed in mirth.

Thursday at Ten

Murder Mystery/Romantic Suspense

Murder Mystery/Romantic Suspense

At Turner’s, gossip and beverages are as important as sharp scissors, but clients know they are safe from having anything repeated. Leaking any privacy is as fireable an offense as putting a side pony on the wrong head. Despite the fact that gossip stopped with Aaron Turner, the owner of the high end salon, the prominent hair stylist wouldn’t miss being out on the floor listening to the stories traded like pirate currency. The murder of a senator is the talk of the day, and the young man accused had been with Aaron only two weeks earlier. He had been a hot fling, but a murderer – no way. When a few more murders occur, including the stylist’s best friend, Trixie aka Robert Landers, who in full makeup was a star, a sexy new detective makes an unannounced visit to Turner’s.

Excerpt:
Stretching his arms, he yawned, twisting his lithe body. The lakeside house had the feel of old money, and the client had been easy, but this patron was the exception. Clean and polite, he took his time and never asked for anything kinky. It was rare for the young man to go to a trick’s home, preferring ‘in calls’ at his tiny apartment. In this case, the money was always worth the time. This trick would arrange a meeting downtown and then bring him back to the large house. Glancing around the room, the young man continued to note how expensive everything looked. The place was obviously taken care of by a staff, or a trophy wife. Many of his best clients were married men of means who would always live buried deep inside the closet.

A trim middle aged man walked in from the master bathroom wearing a robe. Bringing a fold of bills from the pocket, he handed them down to the younger man who was still in bed. Smiling from his nest in the pillows, the ‘for hire’ leaned up to accept the money. The still grinning client was proof that he had done his job well.

Two weeks earlier the prominent hair stylist and owner of Turner’s salon had a long late night make-out session with the same young hustler. “Wow, that kiss is like your superpower,” Aaron told the young man with a grin after the first hot meeting of their lips. “I’m all weak in the knees!” Cody had just laughed as they went at it again on a dark banquet on the bar’s second level.

Aaron knew how Cody made his living. Everyone knew. The stylist was not a client, but he liked his guys the way he liked his salad greens – a little wild. The short, hot fling had not come to equal love for either of them, but Aaron had liked Cody a lot. Hearing that the young hustler had been booked on murder charges for killing a senator was hard to believe. Powerful men often held powerful secrets, but even if the senator had hired Cody, Aaron could not imagine the young man killing anyone.

*****

The entire salon went quiet as two handsome officers entered and were led to the back where the senator’s former wife (Babs) sat. Aaron, scissors in hand, was behind her. Missy and Franny, two well known socialites who had watched the handsome young officers enter the salon along with everyone else, cut looks at each other while brushing away salon attendants who were trying in vain to get the women to return to their stylist’s stations. It would have taken an avalanche bomb squad to unseat the pair from their front row perch to the drama playing out in Turner’s that rainy afternoon.

“How did you know I was here?” Babs flirted with Detective Matt Stone as she perched herself on the edge of the desk, folding a long, toned leg behind the other one. Aaron was thankful that she didn’t reach up and unclasp the top button of her blouse as she ate the hot blond Officer Stone with her eyes as if he were made of sugar and whipped cream.

“We appreciate the use of your office, Mr. Turner. Could we have a few moments alone with Mrs. Hickman?” Matt asked. Despite the age difference, the young officer appreciated the well preserved cougar in front of him.

“Of course,” said Aaron, who had nearly been panting with lust at the sight of the other detective, sexy Eli Young. The uniform on the hot officer was icing on the cake, as far as Aaron was concerned.

“Do you know Cody Patterson?” the detective asked.

“Yes. Not well, but I know him.”

Eli traded a knowing glance with his partner, and then turning to Aaron he said, “Perhaps we should speak somewhere else, Mr. Turner.”

“Let’s go to the storage room,” Aaron answered as if he had been planning to couple up with the man he just met. In his mind he had already turned down the lights, folded back the sheets, and shot the cork off of a bottle of Veuve Clicquot 1996. Aaron led Eli to the small storage room, stepping aside to allow the officer entry. The stylist had to physically restrain himself from reaching over and stroking the smooth dark skin of Eli’s cheek as the officer began to question him.

Invitation to a Murder

Murder Mystery/Erotic Romance

Murder Mystery/Erotic Romance

“You’re invited to a murder,” the invitation read. Dennis immediately calls 1-800-2 DIE FOR to confirm his acceptance of a weekend in the Poconos, a gift from his friend, Jason. He smiles at his excitement about the affair. Cast in the role of handyman for the weekend, he is certain that he can find something in every cabin in need of a little ‘maintenance.’ The murder mystery weekend is an all gay event that wouldn’t be complete without a few pesky drag queens thrown into the mix of singles and couples. Everything is all fun and games, until the night of the murder when a real murder occurs, making everyone in attendance a suspect.

Excerpt:
A limousine was waiting in front of Dennis’ apartment at exactly six o’clock on Friday evening. He climbed into the spacious back as the driver informed him of the options for pleasure available to him – caviar, champagne, television, oysters on the half-shell, and seafood salad. There was another passenger to be picked up before they headed to the resort where the weekend’s game would begin. They traveled north and then turned east to a little hamlet called Holly.

The driver assisted a young man of about twenty-two years of age with his luggage. For only a weekend stay, Dennis thought that four suitcases was a little much. When he entered the rear of the limo, he took a seat across from Dennis, giving him an ample view of his fellow passenger. He was on the effeminate side, with shoulder-length red hair. He believed in enhancing his looks with a layer of make-up, mascara, and eye liner.

“I’ve never been in a limousine before, so I might as well avail myself of everything here.” He took a bottle of champagne, opened it, and poured himself a glass of bubbly. “Name is Billie. That’s spelled with an “i-e” and no “y.”

Dennis hated drag queens. “My name is Dennis. Nothing fancy about the spelling.”

“Well, hi, Dennis. Join me in some bubbly?”

“Might as well.”

A little sissy-type giggle escaped Billie’s throat.

“Well, Dennis, here’s to you. May we both survive the weekend!” Billie raised his glass in a toast. Dennis thought, The guy may be young and femme, but at least he’s got some style. Billie draped his left leg over his right knee and leaned back as the limousine turned onto the highway.

The chauffeur’s voice came over the intercom system. “Gentlemen, I have been instructed to arrive at the lodge at exactly seven-thirty. We have about forty-five minutes of driving ahead of us, so if you need me for anything, just push the intercom button on the left door. Relax and enjoy yourselves as well as the ride.”

Forty-five minutes trapped with a queen. Well, it could be worse, Dennis thought. It could be an hour.

Dennis asked, “What do you want to do now?”

“I’ve never done it in a limousine. You ever had sex in a limo before?”

“No, I can’t honestly say that I have.”

“Well, do you want to? And yes, I’m usually this direct.”

*****

“Sometime before breakfast, one of you will be killed. It is up to the rest of you to unmask the murderer before Sunday noon. Remember that everyone on the premises is a suspect. Catch the culprit…if you can. Good luck. All clues have been planted. It is up to you to discern and evaluate them. And one word of warning, accept nothing and no one at face value. You all have assigned roles to play. Have fun and remember that anything, and I mean anything, goes!”

Jason thought that maybe he could have fun in bed with his ‘wife’ once he realized it was the young man now in full drag who had arrived with Dennis. After all, there were roles to be performed and the young man playing his wife was definitely sexually alluring once he looked past the make-up and the dress. Billie also liked the feeling of Jason’s hand on his nylon-encased thigh.

As Jason left with Billie, his ‘wife’ for the weekend, he gave Dennis a wink. Dennis turned to Carlo, “He’s going to have a good time tonight. Wish I had a video camera in their room.”

Carlo laughed. “Yeah, I’d say that one is going to learn what ‘wifely duty’ means before the night is over.” Carlo rounded the end of the bar and pressed his lips tightly against Dennis’ lips in a fervent kiss.

Dennis inquired, “Your cabin or mine? A bed is better than here on the floor.”

In their perilous quest to solve the mystery, however, Jerry and his friends discover that some of the citizens of Somerville have gone to great lengths to ensure that this particular mystery is never solved.

Excerpt:
Kate turned her car to the left and we found ourselves on a narrow road. Tall trees grew on either side of the road, and with the darkness around us, the whole environment was giving an eerie feel.

“This road leads out of town,” said Kate. “Why would she be driving here?”

I was about to tell Kate to turn the car back when it happened. Courtney’s car came to an abrupt halt and started to reverse. Kate pressed the brakes and her car stopped. I watched as the small blue car kept reversing, coming towards us.

“She is going to ram into us!” yelled Kate, her eyes wide open.

The blue car turned and faced us, its headlights on.

“Kate, duck, NOW!” I yelled, bowing my head.

“Why?”

I heard Courtney’s car slow down and then I heard it drive past us with speed.

“Why did you do that?” asked Kate, getting back up on her seat.

I got up and sat properly in the seat. Courtney seemed to have gone away. “I didn’t want her to see our faces,” I answered, pushing my glasses up on my nose.

“Our faces?” asked Kate in disbelief. “You have taken this lost rich lady case way into that weird head of yours.”

Men Overboard!

Men Overboard

Gay Cruise Mystery with Lots of Humor

Hairstylist Aaron Turner doesn’t consider himself overweight; just under height.  As stylish as he is outgoing, he brings a Carrie Bradshaw like wardrobe in extra large and a fierce attitude to this adventure on the high seas, not knowing that a killer has come along for the week long cruise as well.

Friends Aaron Turner and Phillip Baxter have not yet settled in when the bodies begin piling up.  The best pals begin to think the passengers of the Titanic booked better tickets when they find themselves linked to the dead bodies.  Becoming suspects, they must clear their names before the ship returns to Fort Lauderdale.  Without a weapon, Aaron is left with only his wit to try and capture a killer before he becomes part of the body count.

Luckily, his tongue is as sharp as his styling razor, so he is up to the task with flair and bravado!

Excerpt:
Southern Dawn.  Sounds like a drag queen from Memphis,” Aaron Turner said while looking up at the huge ship.  His friend Phillip Baxter did not reply.  “Swimming pools, luxury spa, two dining rooms, three bars all spread over twelve decks,” the stout man adjusted a pair of vintage Chanel sunglasses perched on the end of his round nose.  The cruise they were embarking on had been planned by Phillip as a holiday surprise for him and his now ex, a muscular young beauty who in the course of their relationship had done more tricks than Criss Angel.  Phillip was going to cancel the cruise but Aaron, his best friend and one of Seattle’s leading hairstylists, begged, threatened, whined and cajoled until they found themselves on the gangway that bright February morning.

“You haven’t been on a vacation in six years and have already paid, so take me!  It’ll be fun.  If you don’t go now, when?  Are you gonna wait until Streisand goes back to Broadway or the Pope begins performing gay weddings?”

With friends like Aaron, you did not need enemies.  Aggression worked well for him.  Like Tallulah Bankhead, he was the kind of guy who had “slept with men, women and the odd piece of furniture.”  The hairstylist was on vacation and nothing short of a Lusitania style tragedy was going to stop him from cramming fun into every second.  Men equaled fun so he wanted to get the lay of the land as soon as possible.

Humming, Aaron left the spacious cabin, moving down the long narrow corridor smiling and saying, “Hello darling!” to everyone he met, one of his standard greetings.  His smile widened with each step as he ogled his fellow passengers.

This time out the great ship was not going to be filled with honeymooners, retirees or fish belly white business people looking for midwinter fun and sun.  Southern Dawn had been chartered by a gay cruise company and was packed stem to stern with gay men of all vanilla, leather, twink, drag, bear and gymbot persuasion.  The voyage would also include a sprinkling of female friends and lesbians who liked to party with their boys.

Going down a wide set of stairs Aaron turned down another long corridor, happily pushing his way through the crowds of men going in and out of cabin doorways.  Near the end of the long hallway, Aaron could not help but stop next to the partially open door of a balcony view cabin.  A young shirtless blond was sprawled in one of the club chairs, head back, rosebud shaped lips slightly parted.  His radiant beauty caught Aaron’s breath.  Stepping closer to the doorway, the hairstylist looked in for a moment before clearing his throat.

Aaron broke men into three categories: those who were convinced they would always be in long term relationships; those who thought Mr. Right was never to be found; and those in his favorite category who knew how to flirt and enjoyed the buffet of men that life offered.  Aaron could have sex, a date and be engaged with a series of different guys all in the space of one evening out.  The popular stylist felt that, like soda and abs, boys should be six packed.

Getting no response from the young man in the chair, Aaron stretched out a hand and tapped on the open door.

“Helllooo,” he called a bit louder and getting no reply, he stepped into the sunlit cabin.  While he and Phillip had flown all night from Seattle, this kid must have come in on a high from Maui Wowie from the way he was zonked out.  Reaching over to stroke a hand onto the bare, tan skin of the young man’s muscular shoulder, Aaron smiled, then recoiled his fingers.

The sun bronzed flesh was cold to his touch.  Stepping in between the wide spread legs of the young blond, Aaron chanced a further peek over into his face to find a pair of bright blue eyes open and staring back at him blankly.

“Men Overboard,” a murder mystery packed with humor and adventure on a gay cruise, by James Brock, is available in the Apple iBookstores, from Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Bookstrand, Rainbow ebooks, All Romance ebooks, Sony, and Coffeetime Romance.

A Country Adventure

A Country Adventure

Romantic Comedy

When Gary and Gordy receive a generous offer to teach two young cardiology interns, they eagerly accept.  Neither has been to the Midwest, and the picturesque town is a perfect replication of its Holland home, teeming with tulips and windmills.  After making themselves comfortable in the cozy cottage built by the original Dutch settler of the small town, Gary and Gordy soon begin to notice a few very unsettling oddities about the dwelling.

Excerpt:
Gary’s face lit up at the thought of another adventure.  “Where is it, Gordy?”

“Just says small Midwestern town.  Please call for directions.”

“You think it’s for real, Gordy?”

Gordy turned the sheet of paper over a few times.  “Has to be, Gary.  The senior members of our very prestigious department lack the sense of humor required to pull off a stunt like this.  Let’s make the call.”

********

After a quick night of packing and a few hours of sleep, the daring duo of doctors was boarding a plane for a few days of teaching and a few nights in somewhat questionable accommodations.

“Ahh, the country, Gary.  Is there anything like it?”

The two young doctors breathed deeply, filling their lungs with the fresh country air.  The taxi driver had dropped them off at the park, but had then quickly driven away.

“What was his problem?”

“Couldn’t say, Gary, old boy.  Perhaps the man is allergic to flowers and fresh air.”

********

The shadow on the wall was the perfect likeness to the picture of the widow that was on the wall of the bedroom.

“Damn, Gary.  Let’s look outside.”

“No way, my friend.  I’m not that crazy.”

Gordy was out of the bed and jumping into his jeans before Gary could stop him.

This romantic comedy is available at Amazon US and UK, Barnes & Noble, Bookstrand, Rainbow ebooks, All Romance ebooks, and 1Place for Romance.  Coming soon to the six Apple iBookstores.  Also available in Spanish at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
